I do not want to post this. But in the spirit of good PR, I have to get out in front of it.

This was a home video taken on July 29, 1988 - twenty years ago almost to the day.

The story was… it was in Africa, where I lived for a bit from age 8-12. My parents were missionaries in the Democratic Republic of Congo (was known as Zaire then). There was little to do as 1) a kid and 2) in Africa.

One of the things that we would do is use a makeshift slip and slide created from plastic sheets. Put a hose on the top and a full water mattress at the bottom and you had hours of fun for kids.

This was, if I recall, a picnic where a number of missionary families were getting together. Note the one guy who was always bound to be “somewhat inappropriate” with his dead and stinking monkey on a stick. Yes, it’s a real monkey. It was already dead.

Ugh. Wow. Just wow. I’m going to kill someone now.

It should be said that maybe the McCain campaign needs to go back to marketing school. This is the strangest opposition video I’ve ever seen in a campaign.

Crazy August. The only good part is that I get to escape the crazy heat of the mid-atlantic for a good portion of the month. And I don’t really mind travelling.

Here’s the rundown. Time will be limited but if you’re around, give me a shout. Would love to grab a beer, catch up if we’ve met, get acquainted if we haven’t.

• August 5-6: Detroit, MI - Ford Motor Company tour and blogger outreach.
• August 12-15: Boston, Mass. - Working vacation to see the Red Sox and meet up with some of the local social media heads. There’s a party Thursday night thats open if you RSVP. Or maybe we grab coffee?
• August 15-17: San Francisco, CA - WordCamp SF. I’ve been there for two years straight and this year isn’t going to be different. Also speaking at the event on the issue of Discoverability.
• August 24-26: Boulder, CO - Making a brief stint over to the DNC festivities. Otherwise, hanging with the Lijit folks.

Give me a shout if our schedules might line up.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation has its own presidential nominee. Forget Obama or McCain or Nader or what’s that other guy.

Captain John Smith is running for President and he needs your help.

That’s right, Capt. John Smith of colonial days. His love of the Chesapeake Bay and the environment extends to today.

Smith, when asked about his campaign, said, “I stand not just for a clean Chesapeake Bay; I stand for clean rivers and streams all across America. For if we can clean up the Chesapeake Bay, and working together we bloody well can clean up every stream, river, and bay in this country. We can make the Chesapeake a model for restoration success, for the rest of the nation and for the rest of the world.”

Campaign staffers suggest that the best way, at this late hour in the campaign season, to get Smith’s name included on ballots is to sign this petition. 10,000 signatures gets it done.

Disclaimer: The Smith campaign is a parody because, obviously, the dude has been dead for 400 years or so. However, the need for a clean Bay, rivers and the ecosystem as a whole is a strong enough cause to vote for even today. Sign this petition and help it get done.
